The Tempest’s Caliban and us

In the present essay the genesis, the reasons for the birth of the essay and the Caliban concept of Roberto Fernández Retamar in 1971 are analyzed. Several reasons are alluded, among them the author's Martí vocation, the fact of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the claim of Che regarding the role of the intellectual and his commitment to change, as well as various events in the Cuban intellectual and political sphere at the beginning of the seventies that made the author outline such a notion. Caliban, a reappropriation of Shakespeare's character in The Tempest, and a "reinterpretation of our world, in the demanding light of the revolution" becomes a key of interpretation, figure and symbol, an abstraction of thought, a central concept of insular thought with a precise length and content.
