Abstract

Based on the contrast proposed by Calame (2009) between a collective expression of emotions in Greek Melic poetry and the “souci de soi” studied by Michel Foucault, the following article aims to analyze in greater detail both elements of the comparison in order to consider the validity of the comparison. The first section is devoted to the particular study of the self-mastery of anger as a concern in the constitution of ethical conduct; the second section examines two poetic fragments of an invective character in which, inversely, the expression of anger stands out (Archilochus, fr.23S and Sappho fr.55N). In the conclusion, a recapitulation of the analyses is offered to qualify and complexify the contrast formulated by the French historian. Anger, it is argued, appears as a central element in the elaboration of an ethical and poetic authority associated with the constitution of the self as much as with the bond with others.
