Abstract

The issue of democracy in China is approached from the perspective of the
contemporary crisis of democracy, in particular the representative crisis, and from  the assumption that it is linked to the issue of global democracy. There are some questions that arise repeatedly in the face of the question of democracy in China: is Chinese political culture suitable for democracy, is it necessary to speak of democracy, is it not an imposition of the West? Having cleared up these questions, some of the most relevant positions of the contemporary debate on democracy in China are analyzed: the theories of democratic transition, Yu Keping's incrementalism, Wang Hui's position on critical theory and the growing importance of deliberative theory. Special reference is made to Habermas' influence on the democracy debate.
