From and beyond Habermas
A path of research on public spheres and the construction of subjectivities in digital times

This article is conceived as a first step towards a broader investigation that seeks to explore the complexities of social networks and digitalization in order to reflect on their impact on public spheres and the construction of subjectivities. This is approached from within and beyond the work developed by Habermas throughout his career.
The article will begin with an overview of the concept of the public sphere in Habermas. It will then present some critical or revisionist analyses of this concept. From there, it will move towards outlining alternative analytical frameworks that can open up the research and allow for a reflection on the ways in which these elements co-influence the construction of subjectivities.
This will demonstrate how these spheres are under threat and how they complicate the construction of subjectivities in terms of consensus-building and participation in democratic processes. It will also show how incorporating other perspectives into the Habermasian analysis can offer alternatives for revitalizing them.
